 Old Dragon’s Head - Where The Great Wall of China Meets the Sea — The Great Wall of China is one of the most amazing piece of architecture and the most ambitious building project ever attempted in the history of mankind. Construction of this formidable defensive structure, built to ward off invasion and to protect the Chinese Empire, goes back by more than two thousand years to the the 7th century BC during the Chunqiu period. Especially famous is the wall built between 220–206 BC by the first Emperor of China, Qin Shi Huang. Little of that wall remains. Since then, the Great Wall has on and off been rebuilt, maintained and fortified. One of the more interesting places to visit The Great Wall is where it meets the Bohai Sea near Shanghaiguan in Qinhuangdao City about 300 kilometers east of Beijing. Shanhaiguan or Shanhai Pass is one of the major passes of the Great Wall of China located south of Yan Mountain, and north of the Bohai Sea. The Wall extends 5 kilometers north of Shanhai Pass where it juts into the sea. This is where The Wall starts (or ends depending on how you look at it) and from here it stretches to Lop Lake in the west, along an arc that roughly delineates the southern edge of Inner Mongolia – a length of approximately 8,850 km.

 This part of the wall is known as Laolongtou or the Old Dragon’s Head, because it looks like a long dragon dipping his head drinking water from the sea. This section of the Wall extends about 23 meters out into the Bohai Sea, and it is possible to walk out onto the Wall and look over the edge directly down into the water below. Laolongtou was built in 1579 in the Ming Dynasty. 

In July 1904, Japanese troops landed at Shanhai Pass, prior to marching on Peking to relieve the siege of the legations during the Boxer Uprising. A pre-landing bombardment of the area, which was totally unnecessary as few Chinese troops were present, destroyed this section of the wall. What stands today is a 1980s effort by the authorities to replicate the original. By the shore, the Changtai Tower, and the Temple to the Sea Goddess that sits in its center, was originally built in 1579, but is now covered with replica soldiers in Qing Dynasty costumes. Most interestingly, the original wall was built using a mixture of glutinous rice soup mixed with sand, earth and lime.

The Laolongtou Great Wall is mainly formed by 7 parts, which are the Estuary Stone City, Chenghai Tower, Nereus Temple, Jinglu Beacon Tower, Nanhaikou (Southern Estuary) Pass, Ninghai City and Binhai (Seafront) Walls. Among them, Chenghai Tower is the most celebrated structure. Chenghai Tower is a two-storey building built with wood and bricks, which functioned as a defensive arrow tower. Emperors of the Qing Dynasty once visited it while on their way to Northeast China, worshipped their ancestors and left many poems and inscriptions. There are also poems by famous literary figures inscribed on the tablets embedded on the walls.

Longest Time on Wire World Record set by Uygur Adili

Chinese Uygur Adili completed a remarkable feat on Saturday by staying on a wire for 600 hours and wirewalking for a total of 123 hours and 48 minutes, breaking the world Guinness records held by Canadian Jay Cochrane.

In 25 days, the 31-year-old Adili lived in a cabana at an end of the wire, hung above the Jinhai Lake at Pinggu District of Beijing, and walked five to nine hours a day on a 416-meter-long and 35-meter high wire, an accomplishment recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as the greatest living-on-wire in history.
The former Guinness record was held by "Skywalking Prince" Cochrane, who stayed on a wire for 21 days in 1981.
The walk, which made Adili a celebrity, was viewed by more than10,000 people on Saturday, who came to the remote site northeast of Beijing.

Adili, who overcame loneliness and high winds, said after he landed, "I was excited to better the record and I appreciated the support from all over the China when I was alone high on the wire."

Adili, the seventh generation of a high-wire walking family from Xinjiang, Northwest China, holds several world records including skywalking above the Yangtze River in 13 minutes and 48 seconds and the longest walking distance on a 1,399-meter-long wire at a height of 436 meters between two apices of Hengshan Mountain, Hunan province.
The wirewalk over the Jinhai Lake was another pinnacle in Adili's career, and it sparked his desire for bigger achievements.
"I want to wirewalk over the Great Wall. It is a symbol of China and I will walk over it to salute to 2008 Beijing Olympic Games," he said. Enditem

China Tightrope Walker set Guinness Book of World Record

Legendary tightrope walker Adili Wushouer has broken the Guinness World Record for steel wire walking at the Bird's Nest Stadium in Beijing, after living and walking above the Beijing 2008 Olympic venue for 60 days.

Adili, known as the Prince of Tightrope Walking, came down to the ground by wire to cheers from hundreds of spectators.

The tightrope walker managed to spend 60 days living above the stadium, walking for at least five hours every day on a 60-metre (197 feet) high steel wire, measuring just 3.3 centimetres (1.29 inches) in diameter.


Adili, who has already held five Guinness World Records for various stunts, is the most famous tightrope walker in China. But never satisfied, Adili wanted to break his own record of longest time walking on a wire, so he began the challenge on May 3.

In front of officials from Guinness and hundreds of spectators, Adili completed his final several kilometres and landed on the ground while holding a Chinese national flag on Friday morning and was awarded the Guinness Record certificate afterwards.

Adili was recorded to have spent a total of 198 hours and 33 minutes walking on the wire: "Today is the happiest day of my life. The Guinness record does not only belong to myself. It is a record for all the Chinese people. It is also a record of the Uighur Dawazi which has a history of more than 2,000 years in Xinjiang region."

Wire walking, named "Dawazi" in western China, is a traditional sport of the Uighurs, an ethnic group originating from northwestern China. In his previous record in 2002, Adili lived for 25 consecutive days above the ground and tightrope walked for a total of 123 hours and 48 minutes.

World Largest Dosa Guinness Record set by Ahmedabad India

A city-based restaurant claimed to have made the world's longest dosa, 32.5-ft-long in less than 40 minutes.

"We have made the world's largest dosa, 32 feet and five inches long, in record time of less than 40 minutes," CMD of Sankalp chain of restaurants, Kailash Goenka, said.

"We already hold the Guinness record for making the world's largest dosa — 30 feet long in February 2006. Today we broke our own record and prepared a 32.5-feet-long dosa," Goenka said.

The dosa was named after "Quick Gun Murugun", an upcoming movie that highlights the merits of vegetarianism.

A team of 16 chefs and eight helpers practiced for the past 10 days to get the correct length.

"In our team, we have 16 chefs who worked in tandem to prepare the dosa. It required proper coordination among the men for spreading the batter across the hot plate simultaneously," one of the chefs Swami Goda.

Another member of the team, Sajjan Singh, said it was difficult to handle the dosa on a 35-feet-long hot plate (tawa) and to maintain a steady temperature across the length.

Sankalp restaurant first entered the Guinness Book of Records in March 1997 by making a 25-feet-long dosa.

While "researching" the Guinness World Record Holder for the most surgical procedures we came across something far more interesting: Lee Redmond, the woman with the longest nails in the world.

A native of Salt Lake City, Lee stopped filing her nails 27 years ago, and since then they've grown to be 33" long. We're impressed that she can keep them from chipping and splitting in that cold, dry winter air!

We do applaud her dedication to nail care -- in some ways she's a woman after our own StyleList hearts. Lee says it takes her weeks to complete a manicure. She buys nail polish by the case, and nailpolish remover by the gallon!

A 19-year-old office worker could step into the record books for having the longest female legs in the world. Lisa Hall, 6ft 3ins tall, of Heybridge, Essex, says her legs measure 49 inches from hip to heel.

Her measurements are five inches longer than the woman listed as having the longest legs in the world by the Guinness Book of Records.

A spokesman for the Guinness Book of Records said German model Nadja Auermann - who has legs measuring 44 inches - had held the record since 1999.

He said Miss Hall had a good chance of becoming the new world record holder. "To be listed in the book she would have to contact us so we can verify the claim. I would urge her to get in touch."

Svetlana Pankratova, who is also known as Queen of the Longest Legs, has been travelling around the globe showing off her long limbs ever since she broke the world record.

Ms Pankratova's long legs and short skirt drew a large crowd of admirers as she made her US debut.

Her 51.9 inch legs were measured and she was awarded an official Guinness World Record certificate.

Ms Pankratova, who stands 6ft 5 inches tall, says her height and long legs have not held her back romantically.

She said: "I have a boyfriend who is 6' 1", so I'm fine. I don't really mind dating a shorter person. He doesn't have to be taller, obviously not someone who is like 5' 2" either. It's not a problem."

The Russian's legwork is part of the run-up to Guinness World Records Day, which will see more than 200,000 people from all over the world display their unusual attributes and talents.

World's smallest man has met the woman with the world's longest legs

Standing at just 2ft 5in high, He Pingping, from China, has been officially named the smallest man in the world.

Svetlana Pankratova, meanwhile, owns the longest legs in the world, which stretch to 132cm.

Mr Pingping barely came up to Ms Pankratova's knees at a bizarre photoshoot held to mark the launch of the new Guinness Book of World Records.

But the pair seemed rather happy in each other's company as they posed for photos on Trafalgar Square's steps in central London.

"...who before ages were conscientious shepherds whose sheep were well tended and diligently protected against attackers who by their rapacity were enemies who 12,000 years ago appeared from the stars to the humans by spaceships with light as an origin of power, started a long voyage within starlike space in search for the star which has habitable planets orbiting and whither the new race of reasonable humanity could thrive and enjoy lifelong happiness and tranquility without fear of attack from other intelligent creatures from within starlike space."

On one forum (allsearch.de's AllMystery forum, in German) this is identified as "medieval German" and advanced as possible evidence for the extraterrestrial origins of mankind. I'm more inclined to view it as someone (possibly Mr. Wolfe-Schlegel Steinhausen-Bergerdorff himself)'s idea of a practical joke on the Guinness people.

My question is, does this man actually appear in the Guinness Book of World Records, as the holder of the world's longest name, or is this a bit of unsubstantiated internet trivia? Furthermore, was the text after "Bergerdorff" part of the original Guinness account, or was it subsequently added on? The Guinness website is useless in this regard (it doesn't feature any entry for "longest name") and I don't have a copy of the 1978 Guinness Book of World Records or indeed that for any other year.

A Glastonbury teenager is claiming to have the longest name in the world - Captain Fantastic Faster Than Superman Spiderman Batman Wolverine Hulk And The Flash Combined. Captain Fantastic - formerly George Garratt - changed his name by deed poll "for a bit of a laugh" through a service he found online. The Legal Deed Poll Service, based in Islington, north London, charged £10 for the legally-certified deed poll, which the company said was accepted by UK Government departments including the Home Office and HM Revenue and Customs.

The 19-year-old music student said his name beat the Guinness Book of Records' longest personal name registered on a birth certificate by 24 letters. He said: "I decided to change my name as a bit of a laugh. I decided on a theme - superheroes - and whenever my friends offered up suggestions to me, I added them to the list.

"I can't believe that I have got the longest name in the UK and maybe even the world - it's just crazy.

"My family have begun to expect these sorts of things from me and although my friends thought it was ridiculous most people do call me Captain and it's been a great conversation starter.

"I really like my new name, so I might stick with it. I sometimes forget what to call myself when I answer the phone, but it is just one of those things."

Damien Field, a spokesman for the Guinness Book of Records, said it did monitor a category for the longest personal name. The longest name to appear on a birth certificate is for Rhoshandiatellyneshiaunneveshenk Koyaanisquatsiuth Williams - 57 letters compared with Captain Fantastic's 81.

1. The Lake Pontchartrain Causeway, or the Causeway, consists of two parallel bridges that are the longest bridges in the world by total length. These parallel bridges cross Lake Pontchartrain in southern Louisiana. The longer of the two bridges is 23.87 miles (38.42 km) long. The bridges are supported by over 9,000 concrete 8 miles (13 kms) south of the north shore. The southern terminus of the Causeway is in Metairie, Louisiana, a suburb of New Orleans. The northern terminus is at Mandeville, Louisiana.

2. Donghai Bridge (literally "East Sea Grand Bridge") is the longest cross-sea bridge in the world and the longest bridge in Asia. It was completed on December 10, 2005. It has a total length of 32.5 kilometers (20.2 miles) and connects Shanghai and the offshore Yangshan deep-water port in China. Most of the bridge is a low-level viaduct. There are also cable-stayed sections to allow for the passage of large ships, largest with span of 420 m.

7. The Rio-Niteroi Bridge is a reinforced concrete structure that connects the cities of Rio de Janerio and Niteroi in Brazil. China has the longest sea bridge in the world

A 22-mile bridge that its builders claim is the world's longest sea-crossing structure was formally linked-up Tuesday just south of the business hub of Shanghai.

The bridge links Shanghai to the industrial city of Ningbo across Hangzhou Bay, cutting the distance between them from about 250 miles to just 50 miles.

Officials welded together a final section to complete the link at a ceremony attended by several hundred workers from the various companies building the bridge.

Costing 11.8 billion yuan (£0.77 billion), the structure will open to traffic next year following completion of the six-lane roadway that will permit vehicles to travel at speeds of up to 62 miles per hour.

The bridge, a mix of viaducts and cable-stayed spans to allow shipping to pass beneath, lies just south of the Yangtze River Delta, one of China's most economically vital regions which is undergoing a massive construction boom aimed at boosting transport links.

Just north of Shanghai, builders this month connected the final link in a 20.13-mile bridge across the Yangtze, said to be the longest cable-stayed structure of its kind.

The 20.2-mile Donghai Bridge had been the previous longest sea-crossing structure, linking Shanghai to the massive Yangshan deep water port.

Construction on the Hangzhou Bay Bridge began in 2003 with a percentage of its financing coming from private sources, a first for such a large Chinese infrastructure project.

Lee Redmond’s record-length fingernails were broken in a car accident Feb. 10. The Utah woman’s nails, which hadn’t been cut since 1979, totaled more than 28 feet in length during a 2008 measurement. The longest nail, on her right thumb, was 2 feet, 11 inches.

Pankratova was born in Volgograd, Russian SFSR, USSR. She played women's basketball at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia, USA, from 1992 to 1995. She was an impact player, setting three school records which are still unbroken:

Her legs measure 132cm, or 4ft 4in.
Meanwhile, my whole body comes in at 5ft 2 3/4in. (And don't you dare snatch that three-quarters of an inch from me.)
Despite all this, Svetlana has agreed to spend the afternoon with me, in an effort to give me a glimpse of what life is like for the big boys and girls.
We're perched by the bar in a pub in London's West End.
Sitting on her bar stool, she doesn't appear to be overly tall. It's only when she uncurls her legs and stands up that you notice how extraordinary her body is.
Put it like this: the top of her legs line up with my shoulders.
I won't spell out where my head is when we stand facing each other. But I won't be needing an umbrella today.
But it's not Svetlana's bust that has, over the past few days, enabled her to achieve a blast of worldwide fame.
She's just earned herself a place in the book of Guinness World Records because her legs are officially the longest in the world, a full two inches longer than the shortie who had previously been claiming the title.

Today, as she sips a pint of English bitter, her extraordinary limbs are housed in a pair of bright blue jeans that fit as tightly as a Harley Street surgeon's rubber gloves.
And quite right, too. She'd be daft to hide them, even if she could.
For her legs are not just inexplicably long, they are also slim, toned and sexy.
At this point, I should point out to my lovely wife that these descriptions of my drinking companion's body are delivered purely in the interest of scientific discovery.

And, in any case, Svetlana said: 'Though I don't mind dating shorter men, I wouldn't go to extremes, of course.'
Would 5ft 2 3/4 in count as an extreme?
'I'm afraid you would be too short for me,' replies Svetlana, whose boyfriend is a mere 6ft.
In fact, Svetlana, 36, who was born in Russia but now works as an estate agent on Spain's Costa del Sol, is not as tall as you might imagine.
Though her legs take up a whole 4ft 4in, her full body is 'only' 6ft 5in.
'All my extra height is in my legs,' she says. 'If I'm sitting behind my desk at work, no one realises how tall I am.
'Above the waist, I'm like everyone else. It's only when I stand up that people say "Wow".'
Nor is she the product of unusual parents. She's brought her mother along to our little drink in the pub, and Lidia, a sweet white-haired woman, is a mere 5ft 11in.
'She was an ordinary baby, not any larger than any of the other babies at first,' Lidia says.
'She weighed 3.2kg (7lb) when she was born.
'But by the time she reached her first birthday, I realised that she was growing very fast.'
Her look is certainly eyecatching. As we chat, two strangers peek their heads through the door of the pub.
It's gawping time at the zoo. Out come the mobile phone cameras. Snap, snap.
'People stare a lot. I suppose I'm used to it, but sometimes I still get irritated by the reaction I get,' says Svetlana.
'Some people do make nice comments, but most of them are pretty stupid.
'I'm surprised that middle-aged men think it's OK to behave like children when they see me. And I don't like it when people take pictures sneakily.'
Yet despite this, she appears to revel in the attention her body brings her.
In the cab to the pub, the driver instantly reached for his copy of the Daily Mail. 'You're the lady who was in my paper, aren't you?
'You've got incredible legs,' he said. 'Thank you,' she beamed.
It wasn't always like this.
'As a teenager, I was quite self conscious about my height.'
Her solution? She joined a basketball team.
'It would have been a waste not to have, wouldn't it? And it made me feel better being surrounded by tall people.'
These days, she flaunts what she's got. We leave the pub - eyes still swivelling - and walk along London's Tottenham Court Road.
She often wears mini skirts (they're sold as knee-length, of course).
'I'm very fond of my legs. I've got really nice legs, so why should I hide them?
'It's nice to show off the fact that I have the longest legs on the planet.'
The downsides are obvious.
She can't travel with easyJet or Ryanair. She can't buy trousers very easily.
She can't bear it when people say to her: 'Did you know you've got really long legs?'
But mostly she appears to revel in her extraordinary physique.
She hasn't ended up in the Guinness Book of World Records against her will - the entry is a direct result of an email she sent to the company when she realised that her legs were longer than the previous incumbent's.
Her trip to the UK is being funded by the publisher, and it may lead to a new career.
'Change is always nice,' she says enigmatically. 'I wouldn't mind doing something else - in the media. Or modelling.'
So, the million-dollar question: would she swop her 4ft 4in legs for mine?
She pauses for second. 'No thank you,' she says. 'I'm quite happy the way I am.'

Ana Lúcia Hickmann - "The model with the longest legs"

Ana Lúcia Hickmann (born March 1, 1981 in Santa Cruz do Sul, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil) is a Brazilian model who has worked for Victoria's Secret, Nivea, L'Oreal, Clairol, and Bloomingdales. She has appeared in the South African version of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, and graced the covers of Brazilian Vogue, Marie Claire, and Elle.

She currently distributes her own clothing and cosmetics lines, manages a photo studio and a DJ agency, and also hosts the daytime program Hoje em Dia, aired by Brazilian TV network Rede Record.
Hickmann was once listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as "The model with the longest legs", measuring 48" (122 cm) (measured from hip to heel) out of a total height of 73½" (6'1½"/187 cm). Since 2002, the Guinness Book no longer lists this title.


She was ranked #47 and #85 on the Maxim Hot 100 Women of 2004 and 2005, respectively.
She got married on February 14, 1998 to Alexandre Corrêa, when she was 16.
